      As well as some magnificent original early recordings, you will learn about:

  • the many similarities in the background of Australia’s two $100 note-ables: Melba and  Sir John Monash;
  • the story of Melba’s father, architect David Mitchell, and his legacy in Melbourne;
  • Melba’s association with Coldstream, in the Yarra Valley;
  • Melba’s marriage and her boyfriends;
  • Mathilde Marchesi and the Bel Canto method of singing;
  • The two Melba-Williamson opera seasons in Australia – 1911 and 1924;
  • John Norton, the muck-raking editor of the Melbourne Truth newspaper and the scandalous things that he said about Melba;
  • Some ways in which Melba is still remembered today.
