“Rev Willoughby Bean – Not Your Usual Pioneer”
LOREEN CHAMBERS

In the Boroondara Cemetery there is a dilapidated but once elegant headstone lying unnoticed in the grass. Willoughby Bean (1801 – 1875) grew up in France in a military family, went to NSW as a free settle in the 1820’s and secured a 2000 acre land grant, convict servants and cattle. Then in his forties, he became an Anglican minister and was sent to Port Albert in Gippsland s its first minister along with Harriet his wife and three young children, to a place with no church or parsonage. How was it that he and Harriet and two of their children came to be buried in Kew?
