The Hawthorn Historical Society will conduct it’s Annual General Meeting followed by Dr. Sally Warmington’s talk:
A Mansion by the Creek
For almost seventy years, a grand Scotch Baronial mansion called Hawthorn Glen stood on a large estate on the Glenferrie Hill, overlooking Gardiners Creek and the Yarra. Now this is the site of Scotch College, but when it was built in 1874 by William Henderson Glen, Hawthorn was a quiet refuge from the bustling township of Melbourne.
Raised in the tenements of Edinburgh, William Glen arrived in Melbourne in 1852 as a musical instrument maker. Initially working for the first music seller in the colony, Glen started out on his own in 1859. He became a highly regarded music importer, seller, publisher and entrepreneur, bringing celebrated musicians from Europe and Britain to perform in his Collins Street showroom’s grand concert space.
Find out more about my third great-uncle William Glen and his connections with Hawthorn, music and family in Colonial Melbourne. I have discovered some fascinating history while researching for the book I am writing about his remarkable life.
Please stay for a cuppa and refreshments.
